Nevada will likely need to add close to a quarter of a million new K-12 seats over the next decade to keep pace with growing demand. At Nevada Action for School Options, we are working to ensure that all students have diverse, quality education options to choose from.
The 2017 New Nevada Plan, led by Superintendent of Public Instruction Steve Canavero, expects the state to become the fastest-improving in the nation for student outcomes.
Making this a reality will require working together to expand wide-ranging choices of high-quality educational opportunities for Nevada students to build on recent gains.
Such opportunities represent a pathway to sustainable incomes and careers — a pathway that will be more and more necessary in years to come. For individual families, this might mean faith-based or independent schools, public charter schools with a distinct approach or instructional model, district magnet school options, or traditional district schools that allow students to enroll outside of geographic attendance zones. We must build on shared vision and need to overcome traditional differences if we are going to create these new opportunities.
Future job creation in Nevada is predicted to increasingly focus in STEM-oriented business sectors, where our workforce will need to compete with workers both nationally and internationally. High school graduates regularly find they are unprepared to take on college-level coursework at competitive levels. Many must complete heavy loads of remediation.
We must reverse this trend.
Attracting, retaining and preparing effective teachers to fill already-gaping vacancies for classroom and principal positions must also be an integral piece of this strategy.
